Nigeria's own Ms. Funke Opeke who is Chief Executive Officer and Founder of Main One Cable was last week listed as one of the 10 leading women who have made significant contributions to Africa’s Information Communication Technology (ICT) sector and occupy high profile positions in this fast paced, and sometimes cut throat industry. The recognition came as part of women’s day celebration profiling in South Africa by ITNewsAfrica. Main Street is a holding company launched to build and operate the Main One submarine cable system linking countries in West and Central Africa with each other and connecting in Europe with other existing cable systems linking the Americas and Asia. Main Street Technologies has established the Main One Cable Company Limited (‘Main One’) is the first submarine cable company offering open access, wholesale broadband capacity in West Africa. Main One is wholly African-owned with a vision to expand the much needed capacity on the African continent and reduce costs of broadband communications across the Continent. This did not come as a surprise owing to her immense contribution since she returned to Nigeria in 2005 after over 20 year career in the US telecommunications industry and currently serving as Chief Technical Officer, MTN Nigeria. She subsequently advised Transcorp on the privatization of NITEL, and served briefly as Chief Operating Officer of NITEL. Prior to her return to Nigeria, Ms. Opeke was Executive Director, Performance Assurance with the Wholesale Division of Verizon Communications, New York.
She is a highly accomplished and results-oriented engineer with the Bachelor of Science degree in Electronic and Electrical Engineering from the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, in 1981, Opeke proceeded to Columbia University, New York, United States of America, where she obtained a Master of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering in 1984.
I believe that her role would inspire many other young ladies considering a career in her chosen field of expertise.
