"Striker Diego Forlan scored twice to lead World Cup semifinalists Uruguay to beat Paraguay 3-0 on Sunday for a record 15th Copa America win."
To many, this talented footballer was the uncrowned best footballer of the year 2010 for display of brilliance and exceptional leadership that took the Uruguay team to a height of global relevance after the World cup in South Africa.
Diego Forlán Corazo was born 19 May 1979 into a family of footballers, his father Pablo having played for São Paulo(1970–1975) and Uruguay in the 1966 and 1974 World Cups and his grandfather, Juan Carlos Corazo, for Independiente in Argentina.
A founding member of Fundación Alejandra Forlán, headed by his sister, Forlán is outspoken on the perils of dangerous driving. Back in 1991, Alejandra suffered a car accident where she lost her boyfriend and became paralyzed as a result. Diego Maradona met Forlan's father during that time, since he was a footballer in the 1970s, and helped him raise funds for his daughter’s treatment. She became an integral part of his inspiration to play football, and the whole family has gathered round to make sure the foundation is given as high a profile as his in Uruguay.
Copa America recordUruguay hitman Diego Forlan believes his name is now enshrined in history after he followed his grandfather and father as Copa America winners. In the game he struck twice, after Luis Suarez’s early opener to seal a record 15th title for Uruguay with a 3-0 win over Paraguay in the Buenos Aries final.
Forlan thus took his international tally to 31, holding tie with Hector Scarone, and completed an incredible family story as he followed his father Pablo and grand-father Juan Carlos into the record books as a Copa America winner.
Liverpool attacker Luis Suarez, the player of the tournament, was also on target on 12 minutes before Atletico Madrid star Forlan added the second three minutes from the interval.
Forlan, a former Manchester United player, then hit his 31st international goal in the last minute after being set-up by Cavani and Suarez.
In his words:
“My grandfather won it, my father won it and now I have won it. It is a pride for the family,” he told reporters after the match.
“Three generations of my family have won this tournament – Forlan will be the last name in history of football.
“It was a complicated game but the team played well. The early goal helped to simplify things.”
Uruguay, who knocked out hosts Argentina in the quarterfinals, claimed a first continental crown since 1995 and broke their all-time Copa title tie of 14 which they held with Argentina.Paraguay, the champions in 1953 and 1979, had defeated Brazil and Venezuela in penalty shoot-outs in both the quarterfinals and semifinals after the games ended 0-0 in extra-time.
Paraguay had reached the final despite not winning a single match in normal time and Justo Villar, who was named Goalkeeper of the Tournament, admitted his team was second best.”It was fair that Uruguay are the champions because they are a very solid team and their attackers are two lions. They are among the best strikers in the world,” he said.
“We got to the final because we had guts and luck. “Today in the second half we had a lot of the ball and we created some good chances but we just couldn’t score.”
